Bungie Developer Explains Recasting of Peter Dinklage in Destiny
An interesting thing occurred recently for Destiny. What was meant to be a one-off voice change for Ghost, who was played by Peter Dinklage, but then was to be voiced by Nolan North in the new expansion The Taken King, soon became a full re-voicing of the character. This left many fans and players very curious as to why Bungie made this decision. Was it because of fan complaints that Dinklage’s voice just didn’t fit what was being said? Was it a desire to “improve the quality” of the game? Was it to have more continuity in the game, that way the expansion didn’t have a different sound than the main game? Or something else entirely? Well, Bungie developers have finally come out and relayed why Nolan North is now the completely new voice for Ghost. Believe it or not, the change according to Bungie was due to the scheduling and availability of Dinklage. Due to his busy schedule, he was not as available to regularly voice Ghost for new material.
The Taken King executive producer Mark Noseworthy noted to Game Informer, “Dinklage was awesome to work with but we needed to work with someone who is more available. Nolan is a pro, this is his thing.” He explained, “You can just call him up and say ‘hey, next week we’re doing this internal play test and it would be great to get some Ghost dialogue in there’. And he’s available.”
This begs the question why not look for someone like North for Ghost in the first place? Especially if availability was going to be a major issue for voicing the character.
You’ll get to see the change once Destiny: The Taken King comes out later this year. The DLC arrives on September 15 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
