Cancelled Call of Duty Game Was Third-Person Shooter
Talking to Game Informer Sledgehammer co-studio head Glen Schofield revealed that the developer was working on a third-person shooter version of Call of Duty. According to Schofield the game was set in Vietnam and would have featured players having to adapt to the battlefield and overcome a number of obstacles.
Using experience from his working at Visceral Games, along with the other co-studio head Michael Condrey, the team was aiming to create a chilling atmosphere with a treacherous environment. Both of the studio heads had worked on EA’s Dead Space and wanted to incorporate elements of that series into the new Call of Duty game.
“We had the underground tunnels, we were definitely getting some Dead Space moments. I don’t mean that from sci-fi, I mean that was a war that was scary for the troops. They didn’t know if in the jungle there was a booby trap, or what was in those tunnels. And there were thousands of miles of tunnel underground. It was a hidden war, right? Everybody thought the war was in Vietnam, but it was in Cambodia and Laos. So we were telling a cool story.”
Although Sledgehammer put around 6 months of work into the project, Activision cancelled it to allow the development team to assist Infinity Ward in finishing Modern Warfare 3. This was deemed more important as many members of Infinity Ward had left to join Respawn Entertainment (developers of Titanfall).
Despite the game being cancelled though Schofield insisted that he would like to go back to it at some point, however he admitted that the setting might have to change in order to make it stand out more and be more marketable around the globe.
Sledgehammer Games is now working alone on another Call of Duty game. Advanced Warfare was first revealed earlier in the month and stars Kevin Spacey as the head of a private military corporation. The title is set in the near future and will see more futuristic weaponry than has been used in other entries in the franchise.
It is due for release on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in November of this year.
