Certain Nintendo Switch Games Will Need MicroSD Cards
One of the big issues with the Nintendo Switch was that it launched a certain amount of built-in memory. And the more games you get, and download, that memory is quickly going away. So, Nintendo made a deal with SanDisk to make special MicroSD cards that are perfect for the Switch and offer a LOT of memory. But, this an optional thing, it wasn’t required…but it soon might be.
During a special reveal, Nintendo noted that “a microSD card will be needed for certain Nintendo Switch games that contain an especially large amount of content and require additional storage for players to enjoy the full experience.”
One of these games was confirmed to be NBA 2K18, and what’s more, it’ll say on the cover of the game that a MicroSD card is needed to get the full experience. Although, Nintendo did say to IGN that you’ll be able to play the game right out of the box, it’s just that if you want the FULL experience, you will need the card:
“To enjoy the full game, downloading additional data is required. Depending on the storage requirements for each game, it may be necessary to purchase a microSD card to expand storage space. When purchasing a digital version of the game, it may also be necessary to purchase a microSD card depending on the game’s storage requirements and the storage available on the consumer’s Nintendo Switch console.”
At present, it’s unclear if certain 1st party games will have this, or if it’ll just be for 3rd party titles like NBA 2K18. We’ll just have to wait and see.
