Cress Williams Talks Being Black Lightning And Character Motivations
Next Tuesday will mark the arrival of Black Lightning on the CW. The show is the first superhero show on the network to have an African American lead, and will dive head-first into some very poignant issues about race and the burden of power (as you’ll see in the clip below). For star Cress Williams, he’s very excited to be in this show and be this character. For he told ComicBookResources:
“You know, I wanted this job even before I read the script. I wanted this job just because I’ve always wanted to play a superhero. I’ve been watching superhero cartoons for as long as I can remember, and — as it became a genre in film and television — it just quickly shot up to the top of my list. I’m like, “I want to do that someday!””
As for him playing Black Lightning, he notes that one of the best things about the character is that he doesn’t have everything figured out yet. He doesn’t have all the balance in his life that other CW characters have.
“Well, I mean, he hasn’t been found out yet! It’s a struggle, you know? And it’s a struggle of doing all of that at a not young age. He’s struggling is the best way I can describe it.”
Black Lighting is back on the 16th on the CW after The Flash.
