Doctor Strange Hits $86 Million Overseas
Some interesting numbers came out over the weekend for Marvel’s Doctor Strange. While the film still hasn’t been released stateside, it’s already opened in a number of territories internationally, and the film has reportedly grossed $86 million overseas (via Box Office Mojo).
The film opened in 33 international territories over the weekend, holding a reported 45 percent of the international marketplace. This opening international weekend is actually +49 percent ahead of Ant-Man, +37 percent ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy and +23 percent ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. All in all, the starting international numbers for Doctor Strange have been fantastic.
It makes sense that the film is doing well overseas, considering the film largely features a big international cast, headlined by popular British actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, and other British talents such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton in lead roles. Also, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is portraying the villain Kaecilus. At the very least, the film will likely have a very healthy overseas box office take.
Hopefully, this news bodes well for the North American performance of Marvel’s next release. The domestic release for the film is right around the corner. Doctor Strange is set to open in the US on November 4, and it will open in approximately 3,800 theaters.
