Doomsday Clock Almost Didn’t Happen
Since the beginning of DC Rebirth, there’s been a question, “Where does the Watchmen fit into all of this?” It was teased that Doctor Manhattan was the source of the recent “woes” of DC Comics continuity, and then it slowly started to grow and make sense. Manhattan was messing with things, but for what reason, and where does it all head towards? Well, we’re going to find out when Superman goes up again Doctor Manhattan in the Doomsday Clock.
But, as writer Geoff Johns revealed to the press at SDCC (of which Comic Book Resources was in attendance) this legendary collision almost didn’t happen because neither he nor artist of the book Gary Frank liked where it was going:
“On the set of Wonder Woman, we talked a lot about it,” Johns told the press. “At the end of the day, we thought, ‘You know what? We’re not going to do it.”
So, what changed? Well, the election happened:
“And then the election happened. And then other things in the world happened, and it changed,” Johns recalled.” Suddenly, the whole story just jumped into my head, and I called Gary and said, ‘I just have to pitch this to you, because I have this story, and the story is bigger than I thought it was, it’s different than I thought it was, it’s more risky than I thought it was.’”
Johns notes that this is going to be a very personal story, and one that reflects the times we’re in. Doomsday Clock #1 arrives in November.
