You may know Drew Barrymore for light bubbly entertainment like the Charlie’s Angels movies, but it’s the same Drew from Stephen King’s “Firestarter.” Her latest TV project has been the cannibalistic comedy Santa Clarita Diet, so with this latest news, you could say we’ve entered Barrymore’s dark period.

Black Rose Anthology is the name of the new CW horror anthology Barrymore is bringing into being. Television isn’t exactly suffering from a shortage of horror anthologies right now, so the twist Drew’s put on this one is that all the stories will be about women, as well as written and directed by women. According to Deadline “Classic themes of terror will be tackled via vignettes about guilt, jealousy, repression, paranoia, insanity, sexual obsession and survival through a modern and distinctly feminine lens.”

The show sounds like it’ll be more psychological than jump-scare based, which is what we need more of. Black Rose Anthology is still in the development stage and is unconfirmed for The CW’s future schedule, but Barrymore’s name could add some heft to the project and increase its chances of making it.

While Drew’s project may be unique to television, it’s not the only female-focused horror anthology to be produced this year. Last February XX, a movie comprised of four scary shorts directed by women, premiered in theaters and on demand.
