E3 2016: Project Scorpio Is 4K-Capable Xbox One
The much-discussed upgraded version of the Xbox One, known as Project Scorpio, has been confirmed by Microsoft during their E3 media briefing earlier today. Phil Spencer spoke about the new model at the end of the conference, explaining that he believes it will be the most powerful console ever built when it launches in fall 2017.
The power upgrade that Project Scorpio is getting has been primarily put in place to support 4K gaming and virtual reality technology. It also means that games will be able to run at 60 frames per second without having to sacrifice resolution, largely thanks to the six teraflops of processing power that the new console will come with.
“The important thing for Scorpio is that it’s a dramatic step up for us in terms of hardware capability,” he said during the briefing. “Because as we saw 4K gaming and really high-end VR taking off in the PC space, we wanted to be able to bring that to the console. Project Scorpio is actually an Xbox One that can natively run games in 4K and is built with the hardware capabilities to support the high-end VR that you see happening in the PC space today… when it ships it will be the most powerful console ever built.”
Microsoft also moved to reassure those who might not want to purchase Project Scorpio, stating that all future titles will be compatible with enhanced model, the Xbox One S the standard Xbox One console.
