Fans Petition Golden Globes Due To Wonder Woman Director Snub
Superhero movies have a certain bias against them when it comes to awards ceremonies, for more often than not, they’re not nominated for any “meaningful” awards. It’s true that Heath Ledger won an award for his role as Joker in The Dark Knight, but many believe that was a sympathy win because of his death that happened before the film released. Suicide Squad won for “best makeup and costumes”, but that’s not exactly a “major” Oscar. However, there was hope with Wonder Woman, maybe not to win Best Picture, but for at least director Patty Jenkins to get a nomination. Sadly, that didn’t happen with the Golden Globes.
Their nominations were revealed recently, and all were shocked when no female directors were nominated despite several powerful and critically acclaimed films came from female directors. This includes Wonder Woman, Detroit, Lady Bird and Mudbound.
Patty Jenkins (#WonderWoman 92% ?)
Dee Rees (#Mudbound 97% ?)
Greta Gerwig (#LadyBird 99% ?)
Kathryn Bigelow (#Detroit 83% ?)None were nominated for a #GoldenGlobe https://t.co/AoM4Iq3Ra5

While three of those were more critical darlings than anything else, Wonder Woman is one of the most successful films of the year. And is the highest grossing origin story hero film ever, AND the highest grossing film for a female director.
So, fans are trying to change things by starting a petition to get Jenkins nominated. At the time of this post, they’re over 6500 signings strong, and it was launched yesterday.
Now, while it’s more than likely that Patty Jenkins won’t get a nomination at the Golden Globes, this backlash could cause the Oscars to change their tune when their nomination process comes around. We’ll just have to see.
