Gearbox Announce Battleborn
The developers behind the Borderlands series have today revealed their first original franchise since Borderlands launched as Gearbox announce Battleborn. Revealed as the cover story for the next issue of Game Informer, Battleborn is described as “a fusion of first-person shooting and loot-grabbing RPG elements in a living comic book art style” which doesn’t sound too far flung from Gearbox’s most popular Borderlands series.
Here’s the announcement trailer for Battleborn.
According to the reveal post on the Game Informer website, Gearbox is looking to “change your perception of genres” with Battleborn, and there is also a mention of borrowing elements from popular MOBA games like League of Legends or Defense of the Ancients (DOTA). Battleborn will be publisher by 2K Games and will be released for PS4, PC and Xbox One – at present, there’s no release date for the game.
Game Informer describes the premise of the game;
The game’s dramatic story assembles a universe’s worth of disparate heroes, from an immortal samurai to a minigun-wielding giant, all battling over the last star in the cosmos. The absurd premise blows open the doors for creativity, allowing the innovative minds at Gearbox to create a tremendous rogue’s gallery of playable characters.
It sounds very much like teamwork will play a huge part in Battleborn, with players working together to wipe out masses of smaller enemies as well as other players. There also seems to be a key focus on the ‘heroes’ in the game, some of which can be seen in the trailer above – there’s a HUGE guy with a massive gun, a female Elven character with a massive crossbow, a princess who appears to be handy with knives and a robotic gentleman character with a weaponised walking cane.
Game Informer will be focusing on the game with coverage from the next month, we’ll keep you updated with any fresh details. It’s interesting that Battleborn is another game focusing on larger than life, bright and brash, charicatured graphics in a similar manner to Sunset Overdrive and the Dead Island 2 trailer – is this the next gaming industry trend?
