Greg Silverman Explains Directing Choice for Wonder Woman Film
If you were to rank the upcoming DC films in terms of importance, Wonder Woman (among most fans) would be near the top. Not just because she’s an important member of the DC Universe, but because to many, Wonder Woman represents what a female superhero should be. She is strong, independent, not reliant on her male team members, but also a compassionate soul. One could argue that the only place (outside of comics) that Wonder Woman has been best represented in is some of the animated series featuring her, such as the much beloved Justice League cartoon.
So there’s naturally some trepidation when it comes to the solo film and the weird rumors and departures that have come from it. What are we to expect from it all? Well, Warner Bros. Film Chief Gerg Silverman talked to The Hollywood Reporter about this, and why Patty Jenkins was selected so quickly after the departure of Michelle McLaren.
“We had a very intensive process looking at everybody. Patty [Jenkins] and Michelle [MacLaren] were really the ones who came to the forefront the first go-round, so when things didn’t work out with Michelle, we all knew we had someone great who had expressed interest before. She came back and is doing a great job. But it was never about the best female director. She has demonstrated doing amazing work with female characters, such as in [the 2003 film] Monster.”
He also explained the “numerous writers” situation: “Every project is different. On some projects, we have multiple writers working together. In some cases, we put writers together who have never been a team together. And sometimes, there is only one writer whose voice is right. In the case of Wonder Woman, the right approach was to have writers pitching different scenes within the framework we created.”
It’s clear that WB/DC is taking Wonder Woman seriously. And it’s easy for us to judge base on what we think we know rather than what’s being done. We’ll just have to wait and see how this all plays out. Hopefully, Wonder Woman will finally get her due on the big screen. Wonder Woman is scheduled for a June 23, 2017 release date.
