Here’s What Netflix’s Lost In Space Looks Like
Danger, Will Robinson! I lead with this phrase because it’s the only thing anyone younger than a Baby Boomer knows about the classic 60s sci-fi series Lost In Space. Now it’s been reinvented for the modern binge era, with special effects better than a tin can. How does it all look today?
VERY different…for you see, this time, the robot is an alien!
It’s not the only thing given an upgrade….60s children would poop themselves at seeing the detailed worlds Netflix is able to create with its endless, reckless spending power. The streaming service and the Lost in Space premise are a good fit — no other entertainment outlet would devote this much movie-quality CGI to one series.
Other things that are different: the Robinsons weren’t the only family sent out to colonize space. Hundreds of other families are out there and we likely saw one of them in the trailer. Also: Dr. Smith is a woman, played by Parker Posey.
Showrunner Zack Estrin spoke to EW.com about his project. “Fans of the original show should know we maintain the core of what was special about that experience of watching that as a child. For new fans of the show, there’s a certain baggage associated with the title. ‘Oh, that’s that campy show from the ’60s,’ or, ‘That’s that movie from the ’90s that was… what it was.’ We are taking that core of an idea—the Robinson family is striving to hold together and survive in this incredible circumstance.”
Lost In Space begins streaming April 13.
