Indiana Jones 5 Is Definitely Happening
You’re getting an Indiana Jones 5 whether you want one or not. It’s been a while since we heard from the project, but Steven Spielberg confirmed it was still on during his acceptance speech at the Rakuten TV Empire Awards. Coming Soon transcribed the speech:
It’s always worth the trip when I get to work with this deep bench of talent coming out of the UK. The actors, and the crew, the chippies, the sparks, the drivers — everybody who has helped me make my movies here, and will continue helping me make my movies here when I come back in April 2019 to make the fifth Indiana Jones movie right here.
Everyone wanted the Indiana Jones series to continue up until Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out in 2008. Now the only real way to make another would be to reboot it, and they’re not doing that. It will be Harrison Ford moving his old bones onscreen.
For me it’s not just that the last movie was bad, it’s that it wrapped up Indy’s story. Spielberg and Lucas clearly assumed they were making the last one; otherwise Indy wouldn’t have met back up with Marion and married her in the end. Ever since Disney announced they would be making Indy 5 eventually, I’ve had the dread feeling its mere existence is going to mess up that happy ending; an ending I wanted since Raiders. They’ll want a love interest for the picture, so Marion will simply die offscreen before the first minute. And that would rip my heart out like a Thuggee ritual.
The only positive news I’ve heard is that Shia LeBeouf will not be in it and they may not even acknowledge the existence of Mutt at all. Fine with probably everyone. But don’t kill Marion!
