Jeremy Renner Wanted Hawkeye To Die In First Avengers
It’s a well known fact that in movies with large casts, someone has to get the short straw and not be featured as much as the others. For the Avengers, that was Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner.
In fact, the role for Hawkeye was so noticeable bad, that nearly every critic and fan said something about it. As this was Hawkeye’s first true appearance outside of a quick cameo in the first Thor film. Jeremy Renner revealed at a Q&A at London Film & Comic Con that this was very exasperating for him:
“I never really told anybody this, but in the first Avengers… I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I’m like Loki’s minion.
“And I’m still not even sure who Hawkeye was at that point. So I’m a little frustrated, because I was so excited to figure out who Hawkeye was.”
“I just had a heart attack in every scene,” he said, noting that he’d stop and clutch his chest in the middle of the shoot, much to the confusion of the cast and crew. When asked what he was doing, he told them, “I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.”
Now though, with grander roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Civil War, Hawkeye has become more valuable to Renner, and he notes he doesn’t want him to die any time soon.
I don’t really want him to die now,” Renner told the crowd. “I really got to explore him a lot, and I can’t wait to explore him more, and there’s some really cool ideas coming up.”
