Jon Bernthal Originally Didn’t Want To Do Superhero Shows
Despite the millions and millions of dollars that are made via the superhero genre, and the fame that it has brought certain actors (which leads to other roles and opportunities), that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. There are plenty of A-list actors who have willingly past on roles from both Marvel and DC Comics. Funnily enough though, one person who almost passed on the chance was Jon Bernthal, who plays the Punisher in the Netflix/Marvel collaboration series.
Speaking to Variety on their podcast, he admits that at first, he didn’t even think about it:
“A lot of the people that I really admire, actors that I really look up to have avoided that whole thing.”
So, what changed his mind? Well, he read about what Frank Castle was, and that made him flip his perspective:
“He didn’t have any super (powers); he didn’t have a mask. He was a grieving father and husband who was reeling from this unbelievably traumatic event. There was something about that that scared the you-know-what out of me and left me intrigued.”
The other thing that helped was seeing Charlie Cox’s performance in the first episode of Daredevil. He loved the focus on character in his opening monologue, and that made him think that this could be possible one day.
That day came in Daredevil Season 02, and Jon Bernthal did so well that he got his own solo Netflix series, which recently aired its first season in full. Check out our review!
