Joss Whedon Has No Plans for a Director’s Cut of Avengers: Age of Ultron
Sometimes films have an extended “Director’s Cut” that show the a longer movie with less studio butchering or interference. Either that or condensing the narrative for the sake of time and money. For Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was noted early on that there was a lot of footage cut from the movie, along with an alternate ending. Some fans hoped that this would mean a Director’s Cut would follow for the film some time after the release. However, Marvel Studios has never released an extended Director’s Cut for any of its previous films. According to the film’s director, Joss Whedon said in a conversation with Nerd HQ that a Director’s Cut of Avengers: Age of Ultron is not going to happen.
“It has always been my ambition never to do a director’s cut of anything”, said Whedon, “and always to make the movie with the studio that we both want to make.” He joked, “Ultron was very complex. There was a lot of back-and-forth. My instinct is no. Just as an artist, I’m super f*cking lazy and that sounds like it would be hard.”
Whedon continued: “I don’t think there’s interest in it, right now. You’ll see a bunch of stuff on the DVD in extras that were meant to be there. But the narrative came together very close to the way that I hoped it would, and I don’t think it needs me to constantly tweak it.”
He has an interesting view on things to be sure. Avengers: Age of Ultron will likely arrive on Blu-ray, sans a Director’s Cut, later this year.
