Magic: The Gathering To Become An MMO
Magic: The Gathering is one of the most popular card games in the world, boasting a userbase of over 20 million players across 70 countries. Attempts at game-ifying the franchise have been rare, but nothing on the scale of what Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios announced today: a Magic MMORPG. We’re not talking some cheap phone game or lower-tier Steam afterthought: the Magic MMO will be a AAA production for both PC and consoles, likely with a $60 entry fee and endless additional micro-purchases afterward.
“This game is an exciting part of Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Digital Next initiative to extend gameplay beyond the tabletop, and we’re proud to work with the talented team at Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios to bring the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to life,” said David Schwartz, Vice President of Digital Publishing at Wizards of the Coast.
“Everything from the graphics to the gameplay is being targeted for a truly unique AAA game,” added Stephen D’Angelo, CEO of Cryptic Studios. “We’re thrilled to provide Magic fans with an opportunity to explore the game’s worlds and characters through an entirely new lens. Get ready to embark on a brand new journey.”
This project is just getting started, so don’t expect footage or even screenshots during E3. Building a MMO on the scale they’re talking about will take years. Hopefully they’ll come up with a finished product worthy of the brand.
