Mark Hamill Changed Many Parts Of Key The Last Jedi Scenes
There’s been a lot of controversy about what Star Wars The Last Jedi did and did not do. One thing that most agree though is that the “ending” scene featuring Luke Skywalker coming to his sister Leia’s aid and distracting Kylo Ren enough for them to escape was very powerful. Especially when Luke got to meet with his sister for the first time in the new trilogy, because the actress playing her, Carrie Fisher, died after the film was finished.
The scene was always meant to be there, but him kissing her on the forehead was all Mark Hamill’s idea. He told Entertainment Tonight:
“I didn’t decide it and say, ‘Can I do this?’ I mean, in the take — I don’t know if we rehearsed it or not, but it just happened,” Hamill shared. “I was standing up and they weren’t ready for it. They said, ‘No, do that again.’ And we did it for a second take, and like I said, it was just spontaneous.”
Another part he changed within that scene was that originally, he wasn’t going to acknowledge C-3P0, but he asked to have the brief scene of him winking at him in recognition be there due to the history between the two characters:
“Initially, I didn’t acknowledge Threepio, I walked right past him. I said, ‘Rian, look it, after all those years of service, even though we haven’t been in contact in recent years, Threepio was the closest to a sidekick I had,'” Hamill noted. “Harrison had Chewie and I had Artoo and Threepio, but he’s so accommodating and so collaborative. He said, ‘Oh, absolutely, you should go over there.’ We didn’t really have time to script anything…just to acknowledge him, and that’s what I did.”
Many fans will no doubt be mad that director Rian Johnson didn’t listen to more of Hamill’s suggestions for The Last Jedi, but come on, let’s enjoy what he did change.
