Mark Hamill Was “Really Scared” Of Returning To Star Wars
Star Wars has a very interesting history when people really start to examine it. The original film was delayed from original release spots, and it was projected to be a flop, yet it succeeded in a big way. Empire Strikes Back brought the universe to a crescendo, while Return of the Jedi is debated as being either really good, or kind of bat. The prequels are often criticized for “losing the magic” of the original films. The cartoons however started out rough, but then became a phenomenon all their own. And then, there’s the new trilogy.
MANY thought this was a simple cash grab for Disney, who bought Lucasfilm and then ordered a new slate of films set in the timeline of the original six films. But what’s more, they wanted to bring back as many characters from the original films as possible. This of course included Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker. But as he revealed, he wasn’t certain this would work:
“I was completely stunned,” Hamill recalled to The New York Times. “I was just really scared, I thought, why mess with it? The idea of catching lightning in a bottle twice was ridiculously remote.”
He also thought fellow alumni Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford would turn down the return. But then they accepted, so he felt he had to:
“Can you imagine if I was the only one to say no?” Hamill asked. “I’d be the most hated man in nerd-dom.”
While Mark Hamill only had one line in The Force Awakens, he has a much larger role in The Last Jedi, and fans can’t wait to see him in action.
