Kevin Feige Discusses Character Focus in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of Marvel’s most anticipated films this year. Yet, you might surprised to know that the film’s villains, as well as the plot of the movie, are a little more focused and “small scale” than the original. This is mainly in how the villains are portrayed. They aren’t ones who want to destroy everything. Instead, they have very basic desires as Kevin Feige states to IGN.
“[The Sovereign are] very pompous, and they’re gold and they’re easily offended, which we’re also told early in this sequence, and that there’s a very particular way you need to deal with them, and you need to speak with them and you need to be delicate, which is not easy for the Guardians, and certainly not easy [for] Rocket. That creates a bit of strife for them as the Sovereign end up chasing after them … because how dare they insult the great Sovereign people.”
And for director James Gunn, he wanted to do a more personal story; one that focuses on the Guardians of the Galaxy, and what their adventures do to them, such as the sisterhood of Nebula and Gamora, and Peter Quill finding his father.
“I really set out to write a more intimate, personal story and I think it is, and then somehow in the midst of writing this more intimate, personal, emotional story the set pieces got five times as big. I feel great about it. Honestly, I’ve been focusing a lot on it because I think that I want this movie to be better in every aspect. And that includes that it’s funnier. The emotion works on a deeper level, which is probably the most important to me frankly, and then the fact that the action is bigger and more exciting.”
Don’t expect to see Thanos or Infinity Stones in this one either, that’s for another movie, mainly Infinity War. This sequel is all about the GOTG. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives on May 5th.
