Mirror's Edge Catalyst Confirmed as a 'Reboot'
There’s been some confusion in regards to Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. First, it was thought to be a sequel, then it was thought of as a prequel. Previously, the game was shelved for a bit while EA tried to fix Battlefield 4, and when it returned, it was made out as an origin story for the game’s protagonist, Faith. During a game demo at Gamescom with IGN, Design Director Erik Oeldahl gave a definitive answer that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is in fact a “reboot.”
“Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a reboot. We basically took the things we really liked about the first game. Faith, first and foremost, the first-person free-running gameplay, and also the aesthetics, which we’ve built on, of course. But it’s a reboot. We’re telling Faith’s origin story, so the events of the first game actually don’t really exist. Maybe they will at one time in the future.”
This is a very curious move, as the original game ended on quite a big cliffhanger (pun intended and not), which left fans wanting more. To be fair, given how long its been since the original Mirror’s Edge, maybe EA is wantied to see if fans were still interested in the game and whether it still has potential to be a major franchise.
We’ll find out when Mirror’s Edge Catalyst arrives on February 23, 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Widnows PC.
