The problem with keeping a franchise alive for so long is that eventually it either becomes repetitive, or it gets bogged down by the story or legacy of its past titles, hence a recurring trend of “rebooting” titles from the beginning to breathe new life into the franchise. Though frustrating at first, it has proved to be a boon for franchises such as Tomb Raider. Now, it appears that Need For Speed is getting that treatment as well because Electronic Arts has officially announced the next Need for Speed Game to be a full-on reboot of the franchise.

Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games (who is making the next Need For Speed title), says, “Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we’re returning it to greatness in this reboot. Pulling on our 20 years of history and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We’re listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed.”

EA is truly focusing on car culture with the reboot, as they’re going to use the game to explore the “world of past, present and emergent trends of the urban car scene.”

Need for Speed is being developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. The game is scheduled for a Fall 2015 release, and you can check out the debut teaser trailer below.
