Nintendo Revives World Championships
This is SO bad! Yesterday Reggie teased some sort of announcement was coming with a Tweeted shot of somebody working out in a gym. Turns out it was Reggie himself, getting pumped for the revamped Nintendo World Championships.
Here’s how Big N explains it’ll work:
On May 30, select Best Buy locations in major cities around the country will host qualifying tournaments for the Nintendo World Championships, which were last seen in 1990. The winners from each regional event, plus competitors invited by Nintendo, will meet on June 14, at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles for a multi-round Nintendo game competition. In the end, one player will be crowned the 2015 Nintendo World Champion. Fans in Los Angeles will have the opportunity to attend the tournament, while others can watch online. More details about the qualifying tournaments will be shared in the coming weeks.
(Little nitpick: Nintendo was actually holding gaming competitions like this until 1994, just not under the World Championships name.)
That’s good for leading up to E3, but what’s Nintendo got planned for the event itself? They have also revealed the day and time of their press conference and digital video stream: 9 AM PT on Tuesday, June 16. The problem is Square-Enix already announced their first E3 conference in years, for that exact same day and time.
Nintendo has thrown the gauntlet and demanded the media choose between them. I’m not sure how the press is going to pull this off, but my guess is that they will utilize more than one reporter in simultaneous locations. Plot thwarted.
