Our First Lovely Look At Lara From The Tomb Raider Movie
The new Tomb Raider movie isn’t set to come out for another year, but we have our first glimpses at what it’ll look like. This morning GQ Magazine published the first-ever screenshots of Alicia Vikander in the role of Lara Croft.
The pics ran alongside an interview with Tomb Raider’s director, a man literally named “Roar.” Roar said this new movie obviously takes heavy inspiration from Square-Enix’s grounded 2013 reboot of the series (and its 2015 sequel) but will also contain a couple new spins.
We drew a lot of inspiration and reference from the game and the entire Tomb Raider canon to develop our world, and I believe fans will recognize that. At the same time, this is a completely different theatrical approach to Lara Croft that will offer something new in the origin and development of the character. It’s a story that not only highlights her incredible physical accomplishments but delves deeper into her humanity.
Movies based on video games have a bad reputation. Roar swears he’s not filming this as a video game movie, even though the character originated in one.
I think fans will be delighted to discover many touchstones from the game throughout the story. At the same time, this is not the kind of video game adaptation you often see, with a lot of CGI and effects. Our movie takes a more realistic, grounded approach. Lara Croft is a hero and a champion but she is not a superhero. She is very much human, and we see her deal with that humanity in many ways.
The previous pair of Tomb Raider films starring Angelina Jolie went nuts with the CGI, the stunts and the over-the-top-ness…and to be completely honest, I miss the kind of shamelessly escapist character Lara originally was. After playing the newer games, though, I understand why it had to change. Lara now reacts to dire situations much like I would and not like the invincible superwoman she once was, and the story is more involving as a result. If the movie takes the same approach, it could work well.
Tomb Raider is currently shooting in London and Africa, and will be released March 18, 2018.
