Patrick Stewart Will Reprise The Role Of Picard
Trekkies jumped for joy last weekend as Paramount announced Patrick Stewart is returning to the role that made him famous — Jean-Luc Picard, former captain of the Enterprise — in a yet-to-be-titled Star Trek TV series!
“I look forward to working with our brilliant creative as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life,” said Stewart in a released statement. “It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him.” Stewart no longer has to play talking piles of poop in animated movies…it’s finally back to the days of dignity!
And where do you suppose he might turn up? You might be thinking “If I had to guess, I’d say this is meant for that annoying CBS All Access service they want me to pay for!” You would be right.
So you don’t have a CBS All Access subscription….well, neither do most people your age. The CBS brand is kind of tainted by the unhip, uninspired and senior-targeting programming the flagship network puts on….which makes it difficult to sell All Access as “cutting edge,” an image upstart streaming services need these days to live.
However, Paramount’s ownership of the Star Trek brand gives CBS a head start on building the geek cred they might otherwise have lacked. Since UPN folded they haven’t really had an outlet to produce new Trek shows until now. Perhaps CBS All Access is a blessing in disguise.
Then again, it’s also going to bring us this.
Last June CBS announced they plan to eventually have four Trek shows running concurrently on All Access. Discovery is one, the Picard show is another. The other two have yet to be revealed….
