Purpose Of Marvel’s Legacy #1
Both Marvel and DC Comics have been struggling over the past few years in regards to sales. And quite ironically, both seek to stem this tied with massive “changes” to their lineups. But instead of a massive reboot (which both did with the New 52 and post-Secret Wars “Marvel Now!” lineups), they instead decided to revert to the more “pure” state of their universes. This worked very well for DC Comics, as Rebirth has been a hit in virtually every way imaginable. And now, Marvel seeks to do the same with Legacy, which released its first issue today.
In an interview with IGN, Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso talked about what the true purpose of the Legacy line is:
“Marvel Legacy is a primer and a self-contained story for the road ahead. Over the last couple years, we took a lot of our biggest players off the board or, in the case of Cap, took them to a dark place, and replaced them with either old favorites (Sam Wilson, X-23, Amadeus Cho) or entirely new characters (Riri Williams) to tell new stories. The return of the classic characters was always inevitable: we just had to align to create the right backdrop to tell those stories. With Marvel Legacy #1, we begin to unveil that backdrop. The question now, of course, is what does the return of Logan mean for Laura (X-23) and Old Man Logan? Steve Rogers for Sam Wilson? Tony Stark for Riri Williams? And what does that transmission from Sakaar means for Amadeus Cho…?” Axel teased.
