Rumour: Crystal Dynamics is developing a Soul Reaver reboot
VG247 has been told by an anonymous source that Crystal Dynamics is currently working on a reboot of action-adventure title Soul Reaver, originally released on PSone before the turn of the millennium.
Soul Reaver was the sequel to 1996’s Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, which can be purchased from the PlayStation Store for £4.79/€5.99. It took place within the fictional world of Nosgoth, and chronicled the journey of a vampire-turned-wraith called Raziel, lieutenant to the realm’s vampire lord Kain. In a nutshell, Raziel is killed by Kain, but is revived by The Elder God to become his ‘soul reaver’ and exact revenge on his killer.
SR’s gameplay relied largely on shifting between the material and spectral planes of existence to progress through areas and overcome puzzles, and combat was very hack and slash intensive. The game was generally well-received by critics and praised for its intriguing gothic story and then high-quality graphics, although it was criticised by some for its simplicity, repetitiveness and unsatisfying ending.
Allegedly, the project was going to be unveiled during this year’s E3 Expo, but the credibility of this information is dubious. VG247 has contacted CD’s publisher Square Enix for comment, but is yet to receive a response.
Keep your ears to the ground on this one.
