SDCC 2017: Wynonna Earp Renewed For Third Season
Yesterday during SDCC SyFy made the announcement that their whacked-out western horror comedy series Wynonna Earp would stick around another year. The crowd went wild, as this tweet video proves.
Last time we brought up Wynonna Earp on this site, I told you the show was “fun but flawed” and that the Bobo storyline didn’t have high enough stakes. Both those statements related to Season One. Season Two, currently airing, has been an improvement.
Bobo is gone and so are the other Biker Demons, handwaved offscreen. Instead of chasing mildly weird-looking humans, Wynonna is now facing actual monsters — monsters that can hit her where it hurts. A dark spirit possessed her sister for several episodes, and then possessed HER, leading to the best episode of the series to date. Evil Wynonna, cackling like a witch and feeding Waverly pureed rat, was a delight to have around, if only for an hour. She recovered, but the experience left her…..pregnant. This was due to actress Melanie Scrofano’s actual pregnancy at the time; we have no idea what she’s giving birth to as that episode has not aired.
Yes, it’s that kind of show. The premise and just about everything else is bonkers but the actors sell it. Wynonna and Waverly have the kind of chemistry where they could basically be doing anything and the show would still be entertaining. They could be working the assembly line at a brewery, they could be forensic investigators, they could be plumbers — and it would still work. They just happen to be supernatural monster hunters.
It’s Peak TV and if you have no room in your crowded viewing schedule for Wynonna Earp, I get it. You’re missing out on a lot of fun if you don’t, though. The series airs Friday evenings on SyFy.
