Sonic Mania To Get A Physical Release With New Content
Last year Sega put all their eggs in the wrong basket. Sonic Mania was announced as a side project by Sega, the smaller of two Sonic-centric releases planned for 2017. Mania would be old-school and put together by fans, while the noisier, 3-D Sonic Forces would be Sega’s big Blue Hedgehog holiday release.
The results were the opposite: Sonic Mania rocketed to the top of the charts and has remained there, while copies of Sonic Forces are already showing up in bargain bins. What happened was simple: one game was good, and the other wasn’t.
The masses have spoken. Sega is correcting their earlier error by revisiting Sonic Mania and giving it the high-profile physical release it was passed over for last year. Sonic Mania Plus, as the revised version will be called, will include some new content and characters…such as Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, two obscurities who originally appeared in the 1993 Japanese arcade game SegaSonic.
Physical releases of Sonic Mania Plus will be published for PS4, XBox One and Nintendo Switch and they will all include a 32-page artbook inside, along with a reversible cover that mimics the look of a Sega Genesis package when faced frontward. And there’s more, but Sega must be saving it for a later reveal.
Look for Sonic Mania Plus on store shelves this summer, at a price of just $30. It’s more than the digital release was, but it’s very nice for a physical price.
