Sonic Mania Will Be Out August 15
Sega has decided to leap ahead of E3 and announce the solid release date for Sonic Mania, their throwback 2D Sonic game. The company says it’s recommitted itself to improving the Sonic brand and releasing better games….but they’ve said that before. It’s hard to mess up the basic formula of an oldschool Sonic game, though (unless it features Knuckles being tethered to an obscure animal character).
The press won’t get to play it until at least E3, but it LOOKS fun, and its design is a combination of old level remixes and brand-new stages. More importantly, there will be a Switch version, and said version is coming out on the same day as the others (Sonic Mania is also coming out for Playstation 4, XBox One and PC). This reporter has a Switch and he knows what version he’s getting.
There will also be a limited edition that comes with a Sonic statue and a fake Genesis cart for the game….alas, Sonic Mania is digital-only and the only trace of the actual game itself will be a piece of paper with download codes on it. You can pre-order the game too, but the necessity of doing so is questionable given the likelihood of Sega running out of digital copies is small.
Sonic Mania zooms into view August 15, with an MSRP of just $20. A more high-profile Sonic adventure, Sonic Forces, is coming this fall.
