Sony Waives Publisher License Fee for PlayStation Mobile
It’s clear that PlayStation is courting indie developers pretty hardcore. Recent showcases of the Indie Arcade event at GDC, and even giving them screen time at the big PS4 announcement, it’s clear that Sony is serious about getting the most unique games on their systems. It’s a smart move, as indie games have swept Steam causing massive break out hits, and Sony is getting in on the ground level of this.
Yesterday Sony announced via the PlayStation Blog that starting May 7th they will be completely waiving the publisher license fee for PlayStation Mobile. Meaning that you can bring a game you design to any PlayStation Mobile certified system like the PlayStation Vita and any Android with a 2.3 update.
It’s an impressive move that further lowers the bar and encourages indie developers to publish on Sony’s systems. Not entirely altruistic, but a very clever move on Sony’s part that I feel will pay off big dividends in this and the next gaming generation. By opening the door for future developers they encourage good will between gamers, indie developers, and Sony themselves; endearing the PlayStation brand to those who want unique experiences.
