Star Trek Discovery Casts Sonequa Martin-Green as Lead
The next Star Trek TV series has found its lead actor. Per Deadline, Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead fame has been cast in the lead role of the upcoming TV series, which will be available on CBS All Access. A number of casting announcements have recently been made for the upcoming sci-fi show. Star Trek Discovery is set to debut on CBS All Access, the new live streaming and VOD service for CBS.
According to the report, Martin-Green will stay on as a regular on The Walking Dead, where she plays Sasha Williams, despite her casting as the lead in Star Trek Discovery. CBS TV Studios has not commented on the casting news yet. However, it’s still unclear if her casting in Star Trek indicates her ultimate fate on The Walking Dead, which kills off main characters all the time.
Martin-Green has been cast in the role of Lt. Cmdr. Rainsford. She joins the cast opposite Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, Michelle Yeoh as Starfleet captain Georgiou, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, and Mary Chieffo. CBS TV Studios is producing the series.
Star Trek Discovery will premiere in May on CBS before it moves to CBS All Access. The show will feature a new ship, new settings, characters and missions. It will also be streamed on Netflix in 188 countries and by Bell Media in Canada. The series was conceived by Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller with Alex Kurtzman.

Gene Rodenberry always wanted more diversity in Trek, so I like to think he'd approve of a woman of color in the lead role of a Trek series.
Does this mean she's leaving The Walking Dead, though?
