Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Revealed
Disney and Lucasfilm officially announced today a new initiative called Star Wars: Forces of Destiny. This will consist of a micro-series of original, animated shorts focusing on the female heroes of the Star Wars Universe. The new stories will focus on untold stories that shaped the destinies of Rey, Jyn Erso, Sabine Wren, Princess Leia Organa, Ahsoka Tano, and others in the Star Wars Universe.
The upcoming shorts will be animated and run about 2-3 minutes in length. They will feature new adventures for these key characters. The good news is all the actors will return to voice their characters. That means Daisy Ridley voices Rey, Ashley Eckstein returns as Ahsoka, Felicity Jones returns as Rey, Tiya Sircar is back as Sabine Wren, and Lupita Nyong’o will return as Maz Kanata. This will be followed by books and a TV special later this year. This will go along with a new line of toys from Hasbro, new Adventure Figures, that will be a combination of traditional dolls and action figures.
Speaking on the announcement in a press release, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy stated: “Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity. We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are. It is a fun new way for people to experience Star Wars.”
Lucasfilm Animation will develop the animated shorts and will remain faithful to the Star Wars canon. The shorts will launch in July and will be available on Disney YouTube, followed by a two-part TV special with eight extra shorts on the Disney Channel in Fall 2017. Maz Kanata will serve as the narrator of the shorts.
A sneak peek of the new initiative will be previewed at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida on Friday, April 14. You can check out a behind-the-scenes video for the initiative below.
