Super Smash Bros Melee Gains Replay Feature
Read the title a second time. We’re not talking about the current Super Smash Bros available for 3DS and Wii U. This is a new feature for the 2001 release Super Smash Bros Melee, for the Nintendo Gamecube. ….No, it’s not official.
A programmer named Dan Salvato has been working on a plussed-up super-mod for Smash Bros. Melee called 20XX Tournament Edition that will expand the game’s features. Player names can be longer, matches can be edited to remove items and power-ups hardcore players see as unfair, and menu music can be customized. Salvato decided to let one of those features out early, as a singular mod: a replay feature.
With replay installed, you can record any match in full, then play it back. The ability to record and replay matches is possible in the current Smash Bros series, having made its debut with Brawl in 2008, but it was never added to Melee. Until today!
The replay feature for Melee is actually more advanced than what is currently in the latest Smash Bros game…in Salvato’s version you can pause the replay and take control of it at any time, finishing the match differently. This will allow the hardcore Smasher to refine their tactics and spot their mistakes, learning to correct them quickly.
Installing Salvato’s mod does not involve taking the console apart or emulating the game on PC. The feature can simply run off a memory card, and the trick works for both Gamecube and Wii. Now the only problem is getting Salvato’s save onto the memory card in the first place. The Wii’s Homebrew Channel can transfer the data from an SD card to the memory card, but for those who just have a Gamceube, Salvato is offering to copy the data onto any card people send him.
