Toys For Bob, the video game development studio praised for their work on Crash Bandicoot 4 and the remastered Spyro trilogy, announced today they’re departing the company that owns those characters and becoming independent. “We believe that now is the time to take the studio and our future games to the next level,” say studio heads Paul Yan and Avery Lodato. “This opportunity allows us to return to our roots of being a small and nimble studio.” It’s the first smart decision we’ve heard from a game studio in a while. The previous year was filled with news of acquisitions, consolidations and big Quadruple A game companies getting bigger. Sony’s most recent State Of Play broadcast started out with a new extensive look at Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. Toys For Bob has deliberately labeled this installment #4 because they have the lofty goals of matching Naughty Dog’s work on the original trilogy, where past developers with their own sequel ideas have failed. The Grand Prix may be over, but Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is keeping the content coming with what’s been dubbed the “Beenox Pack.” Is it self-indulgent to create an entire pack around the development team? The program helps war veterans obtain high-quality jobs when they leave the service, and CTR’s new Firehawk Kart is meant to support the cause. Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is getting dressed up for Halloween. This month’s new season introduces the Spooky Grand Prix, the fourth Grand Prix to be held in the game. Three new racers will arrive with this update: Nina Cortex, Dr. N. Brio, and Komodo Moe. The former will appear in the Nitro Gauge while the latter two will show up in the Pit Stop. Here’s something we never expected to hear: Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, the remake of the classic Playstation kart-racer, is going to have seasonal content updates. New content will appear in the game for months after its release, free of charge. That’s definitely something that never happened in the original! Already, the game is said to have all the tracks from the first game, AND all the tracks from its lesser-played sequel, Crash Nitro Kart. Now developer Beenox has revealed a Grand Prix event that will introduce new characters and tracks to CTR post-launch. The first of these will begin July 3, not long after the release of the game. We got a new trailer for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled today, as well as some new information: this game will be even larger than previously thought. It’ll not only contain all the original tracks and karts from the PS1 release (remastered with modern visuals and poly-counts), but it will also have the 13 tracks that were introduced in its sequel, Crash Nitro Kart. “Since the very beginning, we’ve said we’re giving fans a whole lot more in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled,” said Thomas Wilson, co-studio head at Beenox. “As fans, we know the important role that Crash Nitro Kart plays in the Crash franchise among the community, so we’re thrilled to be remastering the tracks, karts and even the battle modes to give players an awesome Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled experience.” Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled will be playable at PAX East in Boston later this week. Switch port of Crash Bandicoot trilogy gets demo at PAX East 2018 The release of the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy last year for the Playstation 4 was met with cheers from fans everywhere. But back in March Nintendo announced that the trilogy will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch July 10th. However the franchise has been known as a Sony/Playstation exclusive since the start. At PAX East 2018 Nintendo is presenting a demo on the show floor at their booth. The franchise itself started in 1996 on the original Playstation and lasted until 2008 with Mind Over Mutant. The character has making an appearance in Skylanders along with cameos and references in other games and media. That was until the announcement of the N Sane Trilogy. Back when the original Crash Bandicoot was in development, a particularly difficult level was coded, finished and then dummied out. The recent remake of the Crash trilogy contains everything the first three games had….and soon it will contain something they didn’t. Stormy Ascent, AKA the lost level of Crash, will be offered soon for the N-Same Trilogy via DLC. Stormy Ascent WAS accessible from the Crash Bandicoot disc, but it required a hacking device like Gameshark to get running. The level was made inaccessible at the last minute. “As we prepared to deliver our Gold Master to Sony for manufacturing, the decision was made to cut it,” says Taylor Kurosaki. “It was playable, but just too damn difficult, and we ran out of time to make it easier. It remained on the disc as it was less risky just leaving it rather than trying to remove it. It was basically hidden, but it was there.” Some people have complained that the updated physics engine actually makes the old Crash levels
