As I’ve been progressing through FF7 Rebirth these past few weeks, one thing has become clear: a ton of work went into it. The game contains way more content than I’ll probably ever see or complete. It took four years to get this to us, so does that mean we can expect the third and final part of the trilogy in another four? Series director Tetsuya Nomura thinks it can actually be done in three. This bit of information comes from the new behind-the-scenes book Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Ultimania. The book isn’t out yet but Twitter user aitaikimochi has obtained an advance copy. Nomura said that, at the time of the interview, the story outline for Part 3 had been locked down and they were about to start recording voices. He revealed the development time for FF7 Rebirth was actually three years, not four, but that extra year was spent creating DLC content (which we guess will be revealed soon). As promised one week ago, Sony’s follow-up State of Play went live this afternoon and was all about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth — the hotly anticipated middle chapter of the FF7 saga that arrives at the end of this month. We didn’t learn much that was new, but we saw a lot of new visuals. All the major areas of the game were revealed as well as what you can do in them. For all the speculation about how Square might change FF7’s storyline, most of the clips we saw here imply it will largely follow the same plot beats. There may be a few new characters, but your goal is still to stop Sephiroth from acquiring the Black Materia and all the major places you visit will have the events happen that occurred in the original. We’re getting closer to the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which means a new trailer — and while said trailer doesn’t provide much in the way of new information, Square also released a full article on its own website that reveals who’s new, what they can do and what else to expect. Yuffie and Cait Sith will both be joining the team…presumably we’ll get Yuffie first as in the original game, you could meet her as early as pre-Junon. Nothing much has changed here: she has a gigantic throwing star and she tosses it a lot, and she also has a “Doppelganger” move where she brings out a weird-looking doll of herself that she can control, attacking enemies for double the amount of damage. Cait Sith was the “gambling” party member (that used to be standard for RPGs in the 90s) where his moves were controlled by rolling slots. FF7 Rebirth, the middle chapter of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, is set to be released on Leap Year Day of next year. Ordinarily they tend to avoid spoilers, but since this game’s storyline has been out there for 25 years, there’s not much to worry about. EXCEPT in the case of any “revisions” they might have done. The first chapter, which was simply called Remake, more or less followed the plot for the Midgar portion of the original game, but there was a meta subtext about being shackled to that storyline and by the end, the heroes had found an in-universe way to “break free” from what fate had dictated for them. As of today, we know when we’re getting the middle chapter of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy! Square Enix says it should hit Playstation 5 consoles everywhere February 29, 2024. It will be a very joyous Leap Year Day — watch Cloud bounce. The announcement was accompanied by this massive three-minute trailer that shows off, for the first time, many of the locations from the middle areas of the game: Nibelheim, Junon, Costa Del Sol, Cosmo Canyon, and the Gold Saucer. Looks like a lot of the minigames from the latter area will be intact, including the snowboarding, motorbike and robot battle games. The ending of the first game in the trilogy, FF7 Remake, suggested the other two games would be going their own direction storywise, but if that’s the case, there’s no hint of it here. The first day of Summer Game Fest 2023 wrapped itself with what we were all waiting for: our first serious look at the second chapter of Square Enix’s planned three- game remake of Final Fantasy 7. Called Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, this installment should cover everything from Cloud and Co’s escape from Midgar to [25-YEAR-OLD SPOILER REDACTED THAT YOU PROBABLY KNEW ALREADY]. As much as we enjoyed the recreated Midgar from the first game, there’s a lot more promise in adapting the original’s middle, as it’s where the world opened up and you were allowed a lot more freedom. The trailer released today confirmed a lot of the original locations will be here (the Chocobo Ranch, Nibelheim, Cosmo Canyon). We didn’t see the Gold Saucer, but it must be hiding somewhere. Square delivered their Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary livestream this afternoon, and just like we figured, we got all the news we hoped we’d get. Let’s get to it. First off, let’s start with what everyone came for: first-ever footage from Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2, or as it will henceforth be known, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. There are some familiar shots here, mainly from Cloud’s backstory, which as anyone who played the original knows, is suspect when it comes to the facts. Tifa already feels it’s fishy. Square thinks it can get this out by “winter” but if we’re just NOW seeing it for the first time, that would have to be some kind of record and we’re skeptical. Square has also revealed there will be three FF7R games in total. Rumors of a Crisis Core remake have been heating up in recent weeks and….yes, they’re true. At present time imprisoned on the obsolete PSP, the FF7 prequel will be updated with better graphics and republished on everything:

Square claimed it wouldn’t take as long for Part 2 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to show up as it did for Part 1, but….Square says a lot of things. We haven’t heard a peep out of the project since the PS5 version of Part 1 with the extra Yuffie chapter was introduced. BUUUUT….that could change shortly. Square just announced a ten-minute stream devoted to upcoming Final Fantasy projects will take place June 16. That’s next Thursday. In particular, they are promising viewers “a first look at all the information surrounding the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7″…an anniversary they surely wouldn’t want to let pass without some kind of hints at the future, right? We don’t know specifically what hints they have planned, though. At the moment, Square produces quite a few things with FF7 characters in them. As you know, Square Enix will be re-releasing Final Fantasy 7 Remake on the Playstation 5 this summer. The new version will feature slightly enhanced graphics and a new bonus chapter that introduces the Remake version of Yuffie. Today Square revealed a few new details about that chapter. The bad blood between Midgar and Wutai was only hinted at in the original, but expanded in the remake. Yuffie is in the thick of it, being from the Asian nation. Here, she’s infiltrating Shinra HQ to steal a powerful materia (allegedly for Wutai, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it “goes missing” afterward). Backing her up are members of Avalanche, who are helping Wutai in the mission. They’ll eventually meet up with the baddie of the chapter, Weiss — described as “the sadistic ruler of Shinra’s top-secret underground research center Deepground.” Yuffie’s signature move is as plain as the giant ninja star on her back. Last weekend during the Game Awards, Nintendo revealed the third of the six new Super Smash Bros Ultimate fighters. So far there’s been Min Min from Arms, Steve from Minecraft, and now, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7. The archenemy of Cloud (who is already in the game), Sephiroth is Final Fantasy’s most memorable villain, being the instigator of one of the most shocking and iconic scenes in all of gaming history (you probably already know what he does, but for the three who don’t, we won’t mention it here). Square kind of goofed up when they didn’t create any sort of archive for Final Fantasy 7. After the game was in the can, all development work was destroyed, so the static backgrounds — despite costing millions to render altogether — only exist now in 640 x 480 resolution. This means Square can never truly sell an “HD” remake of the most famous Final Fantasy title. UNLESS they get as clever as PC modder CaptRobau, who used state-of-the-art AI neural networks to scan and enhance the original background art. The result blows our minds. You’ve seen “upscaled” HD drawings and pictures, correct? They never look quite right. They’re still fuzzy enough that their inferior origin is obvious. That’s not the case here. It was back in 2015 when Square Enix revealed they were finally starting work on one of the most demanded projects from Final Fantasy Fanatics: a high-definition trillion-polygon triple-A FF7 remake.
