At this point the Transformers are just as well-known around the multiplex as they are around the toy aisle. There have been endless Autobot and Decepticon films of varying quality since the original came out in 1986. There has been nothing, though, quite like the animated picture Transformers One, which Paramount and Hasbro unveiled today with its first trailer. How do you feel about this: a wacky buddy comedy starring Optimus Prime and Megatron, in the days before they were enemies? That’s where this goes, and though there are adventure and action elements hinted at in the trailer, this is a comedy through and through. Every scene is punctuated by a “whoa, did THAT happen?” remark, which isn’t exactly sophisticated humor, but better than what Bay came up with. There’s exciting news for those who’ve been hungry to experience a lost piece of Marvel Comics history: the publisher and toy maker Hasbro are finally getting along enough that a legitimate reprint of the classic late 70s-early 80s comic ROM Spaceknight is actually happening. There used to be a time when toy makers entered deals with comics companies to make series that were (not so) secretly meant to promote their toys. Most of them didn’t last past single digits, but one, promoting a robotic action figure called ROM, took off. Since the figure had no official story behind it, Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema were free to craft an epic storyline for the property that went on for 75 issues, several annuals and tie-ins with other Marvel books. ROM outlived the action figure it was meant to promote, and ROM himself was considered a canon part of the Marvel Universe — until he wasn’t. In 1998 the first Cranium party game was introduced — a combination of elements that had appeared in other party games including art, trivia, language, and performance. The game took off and made its creators a mint, and also turbocharged the career of artist Curtis Baseman (who created the characters that appear on the box). Several other spinoff games were added to the market before Cranium and all that had to do with it was sold to Hasbro Games in 2008. Now Cranium is about to turn 25 (yikes) so Hasbro is introducing new versions of four Cranium games: the original that started it all, Big Brain, Hullabaloo and Hoopla. This revamped line will start appearing in stores this June (see above pic for what they’ll look like). Our one complaint: where is Baseman? The same characters appear on the box of the 25th Anniversary Edition, but they’re clearly drawn by someone else. Was Baseman not available? Did he get snubbed? In the world of Transformers, things are pretty simple: Autobots good, Decepticons bad. What would you expect out of a gang with “deceive” built into their name anyway? But in Shattered Glass, the miniseries released last year by IDW, everything is turned upside-down. The book took place in an alternate mirror universe where Optimus Prime was pure evil and Megatron was the one fighting for justice. And since it sold pretty well, we’re getting a sequel this year. IDW has announced Transformers: Shattered Glass II for a late summer release. The second story picks up where the first story left off, with both sides at war over control of a Titan that could decide the fate of Cybertron. Boy, we wouldn’t want to be the My Little Pony series that has to follow Friendship Is Magic. The TV series, which debuted on Hasbro’s defunct cable network The Hub, was arguably the biggest success story in the franchise’s history, expanding its appeal beyond the target audience to reach all age groups. What can the next version possibly do to hold a hoof to that? The new reboot, which appears to simply be called My Little Pony, was introduced through Netflix with the feature film My Little Pony: A New Generation. It focuses on a new batch of horses called the Mane 5: Sunny Starscout, Izzy Moonbow, Zipp Storm, Pipp Petals and Hitch Trailblazer. The residents of Equestria have been getting around lately. They met the Transformers in an IDW comic earlier this year, and now the worlds of My Little Pony are colliding with Dungeons & Dragons in a new series of collectible figures. “Cutie Marks & Dragons” is the name of a collection containing five ponies, each dressed in the manner of a specific D&D class. You’ve got the Barbarian, the Bard, the Druid, the Rogue, and the Cleric, only they’re horses this time. All five figures come packaged in the same box. This mashup with Dungeons & Dragons is far from the first My Little Pony crossover, nor will it be the last. Other models exist in this line that depict ponies as members of other properties, though they tend to be mostly things Hasbro also happens to own. Marvel worked some real wonders with its licensed toy comics back in the 80s. It was standard back then for a toy company to bring them an action figure and say, “Figure out this character’s story….here are a few basic beats, now just go nuts.” The Gen-1 GI Joe and Transformers comics are beloved for this reason. If there was ever a Transformer that would be worthy of the largest model built to date, it would be Unicron. Star of Transformers: The Movie, devourer of worlds, and voiced by Orson Welles, everything about him is larger than life — and now, so is his figure. There have been toy approximations of Unicron before, but none worthy of his mass. This one will measure 27 inches in robot form, 30 inches in planet form. He’s fully transformable AND has over 50 points of articulation to make him customizable for any display pose you have in mind, no matter how lewd. Sounds great, so where can you get your hands on him? This is where we have to sit down and have a talk. For one, this thing is $575. Wizards of the Coast is teaming up with Hasbro to produce a Transformers card game. We don’t know much at this early date, but we do know these bots are coming to Earth. The Transformers card game is described as a competitive dueling game for two or more players, so the mechanics will be familiar to those who’ve played similar games before — but, since this needs a Transformer twist, the cards themselves will transform! How is it done? …..By flipping them over. Sorry if you were expecting something more flashy, or actual origami. But we’ve gotta keep these cards mint! Your main battle deck will contain a set of large-sized “character cards” featuring artwork of Autobots and Decepticons. The smaller cards contain commands and actions for them. One of the nice things about the New, Rebooted Star Wars Extended Universe is that writers are finally free to experiment with new characters, or new backstories for old characters. Doctor Aphra probably wouldn’t exist otherwise. Invented during Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca’s run on the Darth Vader comic book in 2016, Aphra was introduced as an assistant to Lord Vader and came with two droids much like C3PO and R2-D2 only frequently sociopathic. Doctor Aphra eventually betrayed her master and fled, along with the droids, into her own spinoff comic book — which, unlike Darth Vader, is still going to this day. The fact that an original creation like Aphra can support her own ongoing book in such a tough market, while Vader himself cannot, should tell you something. Aphra is awesome.
