Studio Ghibli Has Been Sold, But Don’t Panic
This December, the Studio Ghibli film The Boy And The Heron will open in US theaters….a movie director Hayao Miyazaki promised would be his last. To the surprise of no one, he has already gone back on that promise. However, he is not so naive to believe he’ll be around forever, and thus he has announced Studio Ghibli has been sold. News like this tends to create panic among Americans, who have never known an instance of a larger company swallowing a smaller one that didn’t result in a worse product, higher prices and benefits for no one but the handful of people behind the sale. This, however, is not one of those situations. Ghibli has been purchased by Nippon TV, who has worked with the studio since practically the beginning. Starting with Kiki’s Delivery Service, Nippon has helped produce all but one of Studio Ghibli’s films. They helped establish a Ghibli museum in Tokyo and Miyazaki, in turn, designed the Nippon TV mascot they use to this day. Direct
