Hex Arcana Announces Pulp Horror Reprint Collection

You know Hex Studios as the makers and distributors of low-budget indie horror, but they’ve expanded recently into publishing with a new division of their company called Hex Arcana. The publisher marked its first release last year with “The Book of Beastly Creatures,” a short story anthology. But they’d like to expand. Hex is now taking on an interesting project: the revival of old pulp horror paperback novels, and we mean that literally. Their first release will be a deluxe reprint of “The Sound of His Horn,” a horror novel by Sarban first published in 1952. It takes place in an alternate 1950s where the Nazis won World War II and people are hunted for sport. These old pulp novels were known for their deliciously macabre and over-the-top covers, and Hex enlisted painter Lisa Falkenstern to create a new one for this release. Social distancing and quarantining makes horror films as hard to shoot as everything else, but the creative minds at Hex Studios have come up with a clever solution. They’re holding an open contest for DIY horror shorts made by those confined to their homes, about one minute in length. The contest is being held by Hex’s YouTube channel, Hex Studios, which launched last month and already has over 400,000 followers. It doesn’t matter how bad your camera is (any phone is acceptable) or how insufficient the natural light is in your bedroom (for some stories, that can work to your advantage). Hex Studios, publishers and promoters of indie horror, have launched their own YouTube channel. You might be wondering why they didn’t do that years ago — well, they did, but we’re talking about Channel Hex, a spinoff of their regular channel that will spotlight filmmakers in the indie horror scene. And to launch the channel, Hex presents a video diary of the studio’s main team and their adventures at the Glasgow Frighfest. Hex Studios has announced they will be distributing Here Comes Hell, a new dark horror-comedy film, starting next month. Here Comes Hell was filmed in black and white and was crafted as a homage to vintage horror classics. In the 1930’s, a group of stuffy socialites are attending a dinner party in a creaky old mansion. That’s sign #1 that trouble is ahead, but they just HAVE to push it by conducting a seance just for fun. They wind up opening a portal to hell and now have to deal with what comes out. But their main claim to fame is their horror character Owlman, who has starred in two of their movies — Lord of Tears and The Black Gloves — and also received some merchandising. The video depicted a man in Owlman’s suit terrorizing unsuspecting visitors of an abandoned hospital. Hex Studios is finishing up its latest horror anthology movie, For We Are Many. This one’s comprised of 13 different shorts, each running around the theme of demons. A wide variety of evil fanged creatures from mythologies all over the world are represented in the dozen-plus-one ghoulish tales. To gather the short subjects, Hex held an open pitching session in hopes of gathering and exposing new amnd unsung talent. Starring in the anthology’s various stories are a bevy of horror veterans including Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist), Nicholas Vince (Hellraiser), and Laurence R. Award-winning filmmaker Sam Ashurst recently released his latest arthouse film, Frankenstein’s Creature, digitally. Now it’s landed a deal for a physical edition, but a limited one. Frankenstein’s Creature is a performance piece shot in one take and starring James Swanton as the monster brought to life by Dr. Frankenstein. Swanton also wrote the script for the film, and no other characters appear on screen. The intent was to combine cinema with the kind of one-man performance you would see on stage. Hex Studios will be bringing their eight-part comedy horror series, Netflix and Kill, to the cyber-airwaves soon. The series’ premise is the terrifying tale of a psychopath and his victim…..who spend all day just sitting around watching television.
