It’s rare that an NSO update hits and no one has anything bad to say about it, but here we are: Nintendo Switch Online updated its Genesis library today with four titles, and they don’t disappoint. First off, Mega Man: The Wily Wars is among them. This was the Genesis conversion of Mega Man 1, 2 and 3 on the NES, so that’s three excellent games in one (Mega Man has no presence in the NSO NES library due to Capcom wanting to sell those separately). Wily Wars would have moved many a Toys R Us Vidpro ticket in its day, if that had been possible — instead Capcom elected to distribute it exclusively through the Sega Channel, which not many Genesis owners had. In a way, NSO is its own Sega Channel, but physical copies of Wily Wars do exist now. Second, we’ve got Comix Zone now. Nerdcore rap artist Mega Ran is a big Mega Man fan — it’s in the name. Now he has announced a team-up with Noveliss, of the Detroit hip-hop group Clear Soul Forces, to produce the ultimate Mega Man X tribute album: Maverick Hunters. Mega Ran and Noveliss use several classic melodies from the Mega Man X series to illustrate stories of a changing world (“Dream Summer”), not-so-distant memories (“Memory Card”), and pro-wrestling rivalry (“Clash of the Titans”). Producers Hiro Beats, Yon Li, and DJ DN3 helped with the beats. A bonus track, “Grove of Titans,” is included on the Bandcamp release, produced by Young RJ of Slum Village and featuring RoQy TyRaiD. “I’ve always been a Mega Man classic and X guy,” Mega Ran says, “but Noveliss has been a fan of Zero since the beginning. Sega threw us a curveball this morning with the next ten games announced for their Genesis Mini. The list includes a game no American kid had in their collection…although under special circumstances, they may have had the ability to briefly play it. The game is Mega Man: The Wily Wars, a greatest-hits version of Mega Man’s NES exploits. The game remixes levels from Mega Mans 2, 3 and 4, gives them a 16-bit splash of paint, and adds a signature electronic Genesis soundtrack. Wily Wars was released on cartridge in Japan and Europe, but in the US it was exclusive to the Sega Channel, a piped-in stream of video games from your cable TV connection. Other Genesis Mini games confirmed today include Sonic Spinball, Vectorman, Phantasy Star IV, and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. Some find it odd that Sega hasn’t confirmed Sonic 3 & Knuckles yet. Famed video game company Capcom is charging into the movie business with a vengeance. Today during NYCC they confirmed the development of two movies based around their properties….one on Monster Hunter, the other on a familiar-looking blue robot. There will be a Mega Man movie! Capcom said the project “aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.” According to Capcom, the Mega Man movie will be written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (previously behind Nerve). Chernin Entertainment will co-produce alongside Masi Oka (the Heroes guy? Yes, the Heroes guy).  The movie is described as live-action, but frankly we don’t really see how. Big surprise tonight out of Capcom. Mega Man is coming back next month, but you don’t have to wait until Halloween — you can play a Mega Man 11 demo right now! The demo consists of one level, guarded by the Robot Master Block Man. Mega Man has two new powers to defeat him: the Double Gear moves mapped to the shoulder buttons. Using the left Mega Man can power up his Buster instantly and shoot a mighty blast…using the right he can slow down time and gain the advantage over fast-moving foes. Better watch out though…Dr. Wily stole this new technology and some of his own robots will have it! In addition to Block Man’s stage, Capcom also revealed another Robot Master — Bounce Man, who lords over a stage called Boing-Boing Park. Funko Pops: They’re for breakfast! Wow! One morning, the head of the Funko Pops Factory walked into the main engine room to hear complete silence. It turned out the workers had already issued Funkos for every single fictional character ever invented, and now there was nothing to manufacture. Now that you’ve all had a nostalgia blast with the first ten Mega Man games in one Switch package, you may be hungry for something new. Capcom’s got you covered. Later this month, Mega Man Legacy Collection will be released for Nintendo Switch, featuring all ten mainline games in the Blue Bomber’s history. After that, in July, Mega Man X Legacy Collection will come out for all major consoles.
