The Japanese video game magazine Weekly Famitsu has been publishing a column from Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai for several years. This week, Sakurai’s final column came out, and it is of course all about Smash Bros — his experiences developing the latest installment, the truth behind some behind-the-scenes decisions, and where the franchise could possibly go from here. It’s that future question that’s most interesting. Ultimate was the largest Smash ever made…so large, in fact, that we can’t conceive of it getting bigger without it becoming unwieldy. But any REDUCTION in size will just be met with anger from the series’ VERY outspoken fanbase. If every single one of these eighty-plus characters does not return for another game, the Internet will be filled with “WHERE IS SO AND SO” demands. As the sun rose today, Smash Bros fans watched Nintendo’s live broadcast with a lot of anticipation and a bit of nervousness. They were about to reveal their very last fighter for Smash Bros Ultimate, and a complete lemon wasn’t outside the realm of possibility. In Smash, this has advantages and disadvantages….Sora is best at jumping attacks and doing things in midair, but he can also be knocked out of the arena much easier than, say, Bowser can. Last weekend during the Game Awards, Nintendo revealed the third of the six new Super Smash Bros Ultimate fighters. So far there’s been Min Min from Arms, Steve from Minecraft, and now, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7. The archenemy of Cloud (who is already in the game), Sephiroth is Final Fantasy’s most memorable villain, being the instigator of one of the most shocking and iconic scenes in all of gaming history (you probably already know what he does, but for the three who don’t, we won’t mention it here). Working with the space organism Jenova, his plan is to crash a meteor into the planet, absorb all the energy of the Lifestream and become a god. He is also known for sprouting a single wing in his Ultimate Form — completely useless for flight, it is just there for the Rule of Cool. If you’re a die-hard Fire Emblem fan, no doubt you were over the moon to hear that the fifth and final Smash Bros fighter of DLC Pack 1 will be Byleth, the latest protagonist from the series. Byleth was introduced last summer in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but a solid chunk of Smash’s fanbase didn’t know that. Instead they saw yet another sword fighter with a weird name and became enraged. We should be fair to Sakurai, and acknowledge that he has responded to fan requests far more than anybody else at Nintendo. Banjo-Kazooie, one of the most demanded fighters for eons, was seen as a distant pipe dream until he made it happen. Personally, for just getting Banjo in there, Sakurai could introduce six variants on Piranha Plant and I would still feel satisfied with the lineup. You can sort of play Smash Bros Ultimate in VR as of today…but only a small portion of the game. With the latest update, Nintendo added VR Toy-Con support…..so you would need those cardboard glasses to slip the Switch into. Said support amounts to single-player, limited and timed offline matches — can’t go online with it. What would you really gain from playing a VR version of this 2D title anyway? At the very least, there’s this: the VR viewpoint lets you look around and observe all the detail that went into the arenas — there’s a lot of stuff you don’t get to see from a straight head-on perspective. Stages that take you on a ride, like the Pilotwings stage, look extra-spectacular. Nintendo’s “embrace” of VR technology hasn’t amounted to much so far. Nintendo surprise-dropped a video covering the release of Smash Bros Ultimate Version 3.0 to the Web this evening. The video was 15 minutes long and could have easily been its own Direct, but….we know by now that to call Nintendo unpredictable would be an understatement. The biggest news of the day was what we already knew: Joker from Persona 5 is coming as the first of five DLC characters. We just didn’t know WHEN he was coming, and it turns out….tomorrow. Joker arrives April 17 and he brings with him his gun, a grappling hook, and the defensive move Rebel’s Guard. If Joker keeps taking damage, his Rebel’s Guard meter will continue to build, until finally when it fills up his Persona, Arsene, can be unleashed. Arsene is indestructible and floats constantly behind Joker, endowing him with more powerful attacks, an increased number of bullets for his gun, and a better recovery technique if he falls off the stage. The anticipated Smash Bros Ultimate 2.0 update has launched, and with it Piranha Plant has arrived — the first of the six DLC fighters, and temporarily free! There’s been some confusion lately over how to secure a free Piranha Plant and when the deadline is. Well, you’ve got two days to figure it out. Nintendo decided to overlap the introduction of Piranha Plant with the January 31 cutoff date, so if you aren’t sure if you performed the right steps to qualify, just add the new patch. He’ll either be there or he won’t. If he isn’t, go to the main menu and hit the + button while the Smash Bros. icon is selected. You’ll see an option involving Nintendo’s Gold Reward Points program; this is what qualifies you for the free Piranha Plant. You’ll want to hurry, as it’ll cost money to get him after the 31st. The popular assumption among Smash Bros fans was that longtime series director Masahiro Sakurai was planning not to include a single-player story mode in Smash Bros Ultimate. The reasons being: they’re time-consuming to make, they’re not as popular as the multiplayer mode, and you can just watch all the cutscenes on YouTube without playing. But one devoted Smash fan with visual effects training thinks he’s discovered evidence a story mode will be in the game. While watching the latest Nintendo Direct, he discovered that the secret menu item Sakurai wouldn’t show, which is pixelated in the video, becomes less pixelated for about two frames — enough to just make out a word. Using filtering software, he enhanced the contrast of the screenshot to reveal…..the word “SPIRITS.” What did we see in the Direct? Spirits. Nintendo’s Smash Bros Ultimate Direct did not disappoint fans Wednesday Morning. During EVO 2018 to the surprise of fans, Nintendo announced a Direct focused on Smash Bros Ultimate to stream on the 8th of August. Now that the direct has passed, it’s time to unpack and bring the important highlights from it. New characters were announced during the Direct. Simon and Richter Belmont, with Richter being an Echo fighter for Simon. Simon’s move-set was shown off. His trademark weapons, the Holy whip, Holy water, cross, and upper cut are available. His final Smash is called Grand Cross, where Simon puts a fighter in a coffin, wraps it in chains and sends it in the air. Other echo fighters announced are Chrom and Dark Samus. We were also shown that King K. Roll is coming as a fighter in recent Nintendo bait and switch. Stages There will be over one hundred stages in Smash Bros Ultimate.
