Today’s Nintendo Direct, released while most of you were asleep, was a WONDER in many ways. We’ll get to why we emphasized that word in a bit, but it has something to do with the Elephant Mario in the splash image. Perhaps the biggest surprise was that most of the rumors were true. Usually when social media starts hoping for a remake of Beloved Game X to appear, it doesn’t. But this time Super Mario RPG, after years of curious absence from Nintendo Switch Online, made an appearance as a fully HD remake, with talking clouds, rude purple alligators, Boshi, and everything else people love. In the same video Nintendo also confirmed two solo games for Peach and Luigi are also in development for 2024. But there’s more…the Star Ocean 2 remake was ALSO real! Someone at Square Enix’s official support site goofed up this morning and uploaded a logo to the site they weren’t supposed to: something that says “Star Ocean: The Second Story R.” Immediately, millions of RPG fans everywhere rejoiced. Here’s why. The original Star Ocean was originally developed by the Enix side of Square Enix as the most gigantic RPG the SNES had ever seen or would ever see; unfortunately it didn’t come out in Japan until 1996 and the cooling 16-bit market in the West meant there was no way to justify the price of translating it. But it got a sequel on the Playstation in 1998, and the rest of the world got that one a year later. Star Ocean, I used to love you. Your first few games enthralled me with your then-innovative active combat mechanics, extremely deep item creation system, and spellbinding worldbuilding and music score. Then you hit the same wall a lot of long-running JRPGs did when they crossed the polygonal barrier. Since the days of the Playstation 2, each mainline Star Ocean release has been worse than the one before it. The reviews for the last one, Integrity and Faithlessness, were so bad I returned my copy to the store after one day, without opening it. The series could have died there, but Square Enix announced they’re giving it one more try next year. Square Enix’s sci-fi RPG series Star Ocean began not on the Playstation 1 (where Americans first experienced it) but on the Super NES in Japan. The game was impressive and earned high marks in its home country…unfortunately it had the double problem of being a late-era SNES release AND the largest SNES cart to date at 48 megabits. Expensive ROM chips plus a shrinking market meant no Star Ocean for America. We didn’t get to try the first game until the late 2000s, when Square remade the game for the Playstation Portable and published an English version. It’s that version that just landed on Switch and PS4. A lot of gamers still haven’t played it. The question is….does it hold up to modern standards? Nintendo World Report gave the game a solid 8. We know the holiday 2019 market will be crammed with great RPGs, but if you’ve never played Star Ocean: First Departure, you might want to consider making room for it. It’s rerelease on modern consoles is imminent. The original Star Ocean came out for the Super Famicom in 1996, and pushed the hardware farther than it’d ever gone. It was an action RPG where the characters spoke in battle, something that hadn’t been seen before on cartridge, and it weighed in at 48 megabits, the largest SNES cart size ever created. For various reasons — the age of the SNES, the expense involved in translating such a big game — it never left Japan. Instead, American gamers would have to be introduced to the Star Ocean series through its sequel, Star Ocean: The Second Story (the title of which must’ve confused a few people). Because you demanded it — the Valkyries are back! The celestial beings of Square’s cult classic Valkyrie Profile have returned to Star Ocean Anamnesis for a special event that will last over a month. Koh Yoshinari, who created illustrations for the original Valkyrie Profile on PS1, has returned to create new illustrations for Freya, Hrist and Arngrim. Other new illustrations were created by Akira “AKIMAN” Yasuda, who previously worked on STAR OCEAN: Integrity and Faithlessness and the STREET FIGHTER series. The event brings with it a ton of new content: New Banner Characters – Fans have the chance to add Azure Lenneth (5-star Ace Sharpshooter) and Freya (5-star Ace Invoker) to their collections through a limited-time banner. To my side, my noble Einherjar! Star Ocean Anamnesis is getting some new visitors: Lenneth and Silmeria, the central figures of Valkyrie Profile and Valkyrie Profile 2. The same Square Enix subsidiary that developed Star Ocean, Tri-Ace, also came up with a unique RPG on the Playstation called Valkyrie Profile. Half-strategy, half-sidescroller, one-third puzzler, your goal as a Valkyrie was to scour the Norselands for recently deceased noble warriors to build an army. Whether you won in the end depended on making the right decisions. The original Valkyrie Profile was critically praised but received a tiny print run in America (the official estimate is less than 100,000 copies, but some reports have the figure as low as 20,000). Fortunately it sold well enough in its home country to make a sequel on the PS2 possible, but the series never continued past that unless you count a DS spinoff game belonging to a different genre. Final Fantasy has had its own mobile game, Brave Exvius, for some time now — but Square’s lesser-known Star Ocean series just got its first one last month. To welcome the newcomers to the freemium scene, and to cross-promote both games, some of the more well-known Star Ocean characters will be appearing in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius for a limited time. Star Ocean’s biggest star to date is Rena because she was the focus point of the series’ best moment, the PS1 game Star Ocean: The Second Story. Runner-up would be Fayt from Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time on the PS2. Both these characters were summonable in the Japanese version of Brave Exvius, yet were for some reason excised from the English version. Star Ocean is back! ….Sort of. After the PS4 critical bomb known as Star Ocean 5, the series has been banished to mobile where, starting today, it lives on in the form of Star Ocean Anamnesis. Anamnesis plays differently than previous Star Ocean games, and we’re not just talking about the touch controls. You serve as captain of a ship full of characters from all over the Star Ocean galaxy, and can choose any three to take into battle. A co-op multiplayer mode (the first in the series)_ will allow friends to beat the game together.
