IDW Reveals Star Trek Discovery Four-Issue Miniseries

After years of near-total dormancy, Star Trek is finally back and making up for lost time with a ton of different shows at once, due to Paramount’s sudden need for content and valuable IP during the streaming wars. The first of these to be released was Star Trek Discovery, which now has multiple seasons and — soon — its own comic miniseries. IDW announced today the imminent arrival of Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century. This four-parter will focus on a different crew member in each issue, with the first being devoted to Grudge the Cat. The issue description says “A flashback tale of her first meeting with Cleveland “Book” Booker sets the stage for a trajectory establishing Grudge as the greatest feline spacefarer of all.” It also says here she’s “the queen.” Um…as someone who has never seen the show before, I was not expecting this. Dr. Spock is arguably the most iconic Star Trek character of all time, with his pointy ears, Sam Donaldson eyebrows, and biological devotion to cold rationality. Star Trek: Discovery had a lot of risks going into Season 01. First off, it was a show being relegated to CBS All Access, the cable channel’s streaming service, so if you didn’t have that, you wouldn’t be able to see the show. Second, the series was to take place before the original Star Trek series, which was both good and bad depending on how you looked at it. Finally, the topic of continuity made many squeamish as the show said it would and wouldn’t follow it. Star Trek: Discovery is the first new TV series in the long-standing franchise since Enterprise, which was meant to be a prequel of sorts to the original Star Trek series. But now, Discovery is going to go ever further into the past, into the time before the peace that the galaxy had seemingly gotten. A trailer has been released for Star Trek Discovery, and in it, we get looks at the various ships, crews, aliens, and more that we can expect from the series that is airing on CBS All Access. There’s a lot of things to note here. First, the Klingons are a race who have been “in disarray”, yet are seemingly coming together to find something “worthy of their attention” which leads to the legendary Federation/Klingon war that many series have talked about. What’s also clear is that not everything is as it seems, as many different characters get the spotlight here, including Jason Isaac’s character and two different ship captains. What does it all mean? CBS’s Star Trek Discovery has been hit with repeated delays. If the original schedule had stayed on track, we would have seen the first episode six months ago, but for unclear reasons, the premiere date was pushed to May and then to the ambiguous “fall.” It’s ambiguous no longer: today CBS came out with a solid release date that we don’t expect them to change this time. The voyage begins Sunday, September 24. As originally planned, the first episode of Star Trek Discovery will air on the network itself. It’ll air from 8:30 to 9:30 PM, and immediately following, both the first and second episodes will go live on CBS All Access, the streaming service where the remainder of the first season will call its home. You won’t get all the episodes at once. There will be a new episode each Sunday until November 5, at which point Discovery will take some time off until January 2018. During CBS’s Upfront presentation this week, one of the big reveals was the first actual look anyone’s gotten at the long-in-development Star Trek Discovery, aka the first attempt in years to revitalize the Trek brand on the small screen. It takes place ten years before the events of the original series and stars The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green. CBS was gracious enough to put the trailer that the press saw online. It’s getting mixed reactions. See what you think…. Did you like it? And if you do, did you like it enough to pay for it? CBS, as far as we know, is developing a new Star Trek series — the first since the franchise exited television back in the early 2000’s. But it’s anyone’s guess when we’ll actually get to see this alleged Star Trek Discovery, the first original program for the CBS All Access streaming service. Originally the show was to already have debuted — a January 2017 release date was on the original schedule. That date was changed to May 2017, then two months ago it slid down to “sometime this fall.” Now CBS Interactive president Marc DeBevoise says he’s given up on determining when Star Trek Discovery will be ready. As of today, Star Trek is officially back as a TV property! The production crew released this video to YouTube showing off the set of Star Trek Discovery, the latest in a long line of Trek-programs that has been dormant for over a decade. The show was originally announced for a May 2017 debut, but because of this late start, it won’t be showing up until sometime later (date yet to be determined). The next Star Trek TV series has found its lead actor. Per Deadline, Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead fame has been cast in the lead role of the upcoming TV series, which will be available on CBS All Access. A number of casting announcements have recently been made for the upcoming sci-fi show. Star Trek Discovery is set to debut on CBS All Access, the new live streaming and VOD service for CBS. According to the report, Martin-Green will stay on as a regular on The Walking Dead, where she plays Sasha Williams, despite her casting as the lead in Star Trek Discovery. The upcoming Star Trek TV series, titled Star Trek Discovery, which is set before the original Star Trek TV show, has just lost its original showrunner in Bryan Fuller, who previously worked on such acclaimed shows as Hannibal. However, CBS claims this development is not due to a creative dispute, but he is stepping down from the “day to day” operations of the show, due to his already busy schedule running two other shows. According to a statement, Fuller will be involved in the show as an executive producer, as he helped helm the first two episodes. Now, the show will be ran by executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.
