  Hey Paisanos!  Welcome back for another mission with your fellow Couch Commandos!  This one has been a fun one.  We pit the now infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros live-action movie against ILLUMNATION’s now BILLION DOLLAR BLOCKBUSTER Super Mario Bros. Click on in to see what we think and PLEASE let us know what you think.  It was an interesting discussion because both movies have their merits and shortcomings.  I definitely think ILLUMNATION was the way to go, but there’s a lot to be said for the interesting creativity that comes from wild creations like what happened in 1993. Chris Pratt’s debut as  Mario is like a beast that has been unleashed on the first trailer. For years Fans grow up listening to Charles Martinet as Mario’s voice actor. He have a think Italian accent  and has the iconic cartoonish voice. Chris Pratt’s Mario sounded like Chris Pratt  sounded like  Star-Lord and Owen Grady. To make it simple he sounded like Chris Himself. He didn’t try to sound like Charles Martinet because I guess it is Production’s decision. My speculation is that they Chris Pratt’s distinctive speaking style because he is such a well-known actor. Him trying to Sound like Mario will hide the actor recognition. Despite previous efforts to Cancel Culture him, the fact that he is now a star in multiple movie franchises is evidence that his name is  still well known.   Super Mario is one of the most Iconic Video Game characters of all time. Super Mario Bros turns 35 next month. Mario himself, having debuted in 1981’s Donkey Kong, is closer to 40, but Nintendo has always treated his first original console game appearance like his birthday. They have a LOT planned for this year’s celebration, including the return of the Game and Watch brand. Game and Watch was the original handheld system, brought about by Gunpei Yokoi in 1980 when he noticed Japanese businessmen would fiddle on their calculators to pass time. It was possible to make simplistic games out of the same technology, so Nintendo did just that, blinking a board of static images on and off to simulate movement. Tiger Electronics would later copy and mangle the formula throughout the 1990s. Nintendo’s early arcade titles like Donkey Kong were translated into Game and Watches, but Super Mario Bros. skipped the conversion…until now. Did you ever kick around the theory that when merchants are trying to sell things to rich people, they use the same materials but jack up the price a thousandfold just to convince them they’re buying something better? That’s definitely what’s going through my mind when I see this $20,000 watch with 8-bit characters from Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. franchise on it. The collectible watch was created by Romain Jerome, a man who makes his living crafting watches for the wealthy. He’s created a watch made with old space shuttle parts and actual moon dust — who knows where he got that stuff, but that’s the kind of thing I’d expect to be expensive. However, that’s not so much the case with this piece. With no precious metals or materials to speak of, it looks like it should cost 20 dollars and not $20,000. Nintendo have revealed several different editions of Super Mario Maker that will be available in stores when the game launches on September 11. Although these packages have only been confirmed for Europe, it is likely similar deals will make their way to other territories. In addition to a standard edition pack that simply includes the game and a special art book, there will be two more expensive options. These are a Limited Edition Pack that includes the game, art book and a Classic Colours Mario amiibo and a Premium Edition that includes everything in the other versions of the game but also comes with a 32GB black Wii U. The idea for Super Mario Maker first arose in 2013 when developers inside Nintendo began to create a tool to be used internally that would help them to create new levels quickly and effectively for future titles. Computer Uses YouTube To Design Its Own Mario Levels

Super Mario Maker doesn’t come out until September, but it’s already been rendered obsolete (as have humans). Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have engineered a computer program that watches YouTube Let’s Plays of simple two-dimensional video games, then creates its own level sections based on the knowledge it’s gained. The program studies sprite movement to analyze where players spend most of their time in a game level, and uses this knowledge to calculate level layouts. It studies the placement of blocks, bricks and pipes to determine where they should be placed, and where they shouldn’t. It uses spatial analysis to know how far is too far to make an in-game jump. After viewing 17 game videos, the program was able to generate 151 original level sections for Super Mario Bros. This number soon increased to 334. “An initial evaluation of our approach indicates an ability to produce level sections that are both playable and close to the original without hand coding any design criteria,” said lead researcher Matthew

I’ll be blunt here; Nintendo’s in trouble. It’s been a hard crash for them. Wii sales fell off of a cliff, and the 3DS has faced challenges in the marketplace. Nintendo had to cut prices far earlier than anticipated, and the company is losing money for the first time ever. But there was a beacon of hope on the horizon, their new console – the Wii U. Wii U’s defining feature is a gamepad with an embedded touchscreen, sort of recreating the DS experience with a console setup. While the touchscreen is the main controller, Wii remotes can be used as well, and the console finally supports HD visuals. Beyond that and a few demos, large questions remained about the WiiU. That would be saved until this year. Nintendo had said beforehand that no price or date would be revealed at E3, but more concrete details on the system itself, and the exciting new games for the console, would be there.
