There’s a Release Date for South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Good news for South Park fans, a new South Park video game titled, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, is set to be released sometime in 2017. The game follows the hit 2014 game, South Park: The Stick of Truth. Fractured But Whole should do very well with fans, much like its 2014 predecessor, and will likely garner positive reviews critics. The game is being published by Ubisoft for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
The boys from South Park are no strangers to the world of video games, but audiences still aren’t quite used to the quality we now expect from titles inspired by the show. We’ve come a long way from the first-person shooters and kart racers of the late ’90s. Following a few successful outings for Xbox Live Arcade the show gave fans one last casual outing with a South Park-themed casino title included with an assortment of licensed slot games based on popular movies, comics, and TV shows. The game is your standard slot reel in many ways but incorporates the characters and humor that have come to define the show. Then everything changed when Ubisoft and Obsidian Entertainment released The Stick of Truth. Stick of Truth adapted the show into an incredibly deep RPG that managed to get everything right and was actually one of the best games of 2014. Now fans are hoping that the studio can get lightning to strike twice with the sequel.
The Fractured But Whole, the latest game from the series, is based around the show’s main characters, Stan, Cartman, Kyle, Kenny and Butters, and their superhero alter egos The Coon (Cartman), Mysterion (Kenny), The Human Kite (Kyle), Toolshed (Stan), and Professor Chaos (Butters). While playing the game, you are able to recruit up to 13 members of the “Coon and Friends” to help save the town by building out your unique superpowers to become the hero South Park needs.
The game takes a turn though as Cartman gets power hungry, and the superhero squad splits into separate teams, starting a potty-mouthed Civil War. The two groups going against each other are Cartman’s Coon and Friends, and Mysterion’s The Freedom Pals.
The game was initially scheduled to come out on December 6, 2016, but with Season 20 of the popular Comedy Central show ending on December 7, 2016, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone wanted some additional time to add in some of the show’s recent references such as Donald Trump’s Presidency, Member Berries, Internet trolling, and other sub-plots. This should help to keep the game relevant and up to date with the show itself. The game is now slated for a spring release which is estimated to be March 31, 2017.
“Coon and Friends” might be the most genius group of characters that Parker and Stone have created during the show’s historic 20 year run and the idea of a game centering around them is exciting, to say the least. We haven’t heard anything yet but we’re hoping that Parker and Stone will somehow incorporate Randy Marsh, because it just doesn’t feel like South Park if Randy isn’t involved. The anticipation for this game is already driving me nuts, so can it just be March already?
