Abandoned Game Boy RPG Leaked By Its Creators
The story of Mythri is a true American tale of indie game development, even if a game was never fully produced. Back in the late 90’s a few programmers got together, founded a small software company, and gave their best shot at producing their own Game Boy game. Because they loved JRPGs so much, they decided to create a homegrown version with every element they loved. They called themselves Team XK, and development of their first title began in 1998, when the Game Boy Color first hit the market.
In those days, there was no Steam. Releasing your game online was doable as an act, but barely anybody went that route because the market for digital games barely existed. Getting your game published meant physical copies, and physical copies meant courting big game studios. Team XK worked on Mythri whenever they could (without pay), patching it together by figuring out handheld programming from scratch. Unfortunately, none of their demos were able to attract attention or investment money, and eventually it took so long that the GBC became obsolete and was replaced with the Game Boy Advance.
Because of this there are two versions of Mythri: the GBC version and the GBA version. Now you can mess around with what exists of both. The founding members of Team XK have made available everything that exists from this abandoned game for free download, including both versions and the full soundtrack. Get it all here!
The team’s various artists went on to better places with the experience gained from Mythri — members have worked since for Konami, Wayforward and NIS America.
