Gran Turismo 6: what we know so far
In case you missed it, Japanese videogames designer and professional racing driver Kazunori Yamauchi visited the UK’s famous Silverstone racing circuit yesterday to lift the veil on Gran Turismo 6 – a fitting way to celebrate the real driving simulator’s 15th birthday. Aside from giving guests a chance to demo the game, the afternoon-long media event offered up information in abundance about Kaz’s new project. Here’s our synopsis.
The details we’ve provided below have been extracted from Sony Computer Entertainment’s Event Report, complimented by statements given by Yamauchi on the day.
- GT6 is built on a refactored, compact game engine that is flexible enough to expand and augment over time
- Connectivity with other devices, such as smart phones, tablets and PCs, will be introduced via a mobile and web-based application, enhancing social and community-related functions
- Players will be able to create their own online tournaments and participate in global community and club events
- A vastly improved in-game user interface has been promised, designed to reduce loading times and allow for more efficient navigation
- There will be notable new additions to the already impressive line-up of historic, road and race cars – bringing the total car list to 1,200 at launch
- Customisation options will offer the greatest ever level of personalisation, with several thousand interchangeable aerodynamic parts and custom wheels available for almost all cars
- Polyphony Digital has partnered with tire manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension company KW Automotive to create a more realistic physics engine
- Seven new locations have been added to Gran Turismo 5’s line-up, taking the total to 33. It is believed GT6 will ship with 71 different course layouts to drive – 19 of them brand new
- Course creation will make a return, boasting a revamped generation algorithm as well as gorgeous scenery spanning several tens of square kilometres
- Yamauchi does have a PS4 version of GT6 “in mind”, but for now the PS3 version is his only focus
And on that note, we’ll leave you to salivate over the racer’s reveal trailer. You can look forward to learning much more about Gran Turismo 6 at this year’s E3 and Gamescom exhibitions.
