Meet Kiernan Shipka, The Next Sabrina
A lot of us grew up with Sabrina the Teenage Witch in some form. For some it was the comic books, for others it was the TV sitcom or one of her cartoon shows. Like Doctor Who, Sabrina never truly dies, she just regenerates into a new form and continues on. And the latest Teen Witch is Kiernan Shipka, cast in the starring role of Netflix’s Sabrina series.
Shipka is most known through her role as Sally Draper in the TV series Mad Men, and she’s also starred in “Feud” on FX. The new Sabrina series, which doesn’t have a finalized title, is in pre-production and two seasons have been greenlit.
If you noticed this article is placed in the “horror” section of Popgeeks, you might be asking why, as usually Sabrina is about as scary as a construction paper ghost. Normally, that tends to be the case, but Netflix’s Sabrina is aiming for an older audience — and will be a much darker take on the mythos. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the executive producer, also writes “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” a pulpy horror version of the character. The show will be similar in tone.
According to Variety, “Sabrina is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world.” Lots of luck to you, Miss Spellman…may you continue to work your magic for decades to come.
