NBC’s “Timeless” Cancelled, Then Uncancelled
This season, four time travel shows on separate networks went head-to-head and cancelled each other out — literally. ABC’s Time After Time, Fox’s Making History, CW’s Frequency and NBC’s Timeless all debuted around the same time and caused instant fatigue for viewers. One timey-wimey show might have been able to succeed on its own, but so many at once killed interest in any of them.
But hold the phone — three days after the announcement that all four were cancelled, one was just UNcancelled today: Timeless. NBC made the announcement out of nowhere this morning.
The news is so unorthodox that some people are wondering if it was staged this way on purpose, since the show in question is time-travel themed. A tweet from showrunner Eric Kripke played to the theory: “The #TimeTeam went back 3 days, and changed history. @nbc picked us up for 10 episodes. Seriously. Airs next summer.”
According to THR, though, this was not an intentional stunt. NBC has been placing a greater emphasis on owning its own programs lately, forcing the shows it runs from other studios (such as Sony Pictures Television, the makers of Timeless) to get creative when bargaining with them. Sony wanted to keep Timeless in production, believing it had a hit on their hands that was just given the wrong time slot.
Noting its popularity in the ratings with families, Sony made the proposal of a more “family friendly” second season at 8 PM — and to sweeten the deal, the lion’s share of profits for Season 2 would be handed over to NBC. The network took the deal and renewed Timeless for 10 episodes. Season 1 had 16.
While Kripke has already stated Season 2 of Timeless would air in the summer of 2018, that is up in the air for the moment. It could debut as early as the spring — guess it depends on what else fails.
