Ridley Scott Won’t Direct Superhero Film
The film market is filled with numerous genres. And like any form of media, there are ebbs and flows and trends that often grab the attention of many directors. The latest one is easily the superhero film genre. Between Marvel and DC Comics, there’s a lot of potential for not only critical acclaim, but big money to be made. Not to mention that numerous heroes fall into various genres themselves.
Many directors, both famous and indie, have taken a stab at hero films with various success. One that will likely never do it though? Is apparently Ridley Scott. Despite being a genius behind the camera, and having numerous big name titles to his name, Scott told many journalists that he has no desire to delve into a superhero film:
“Superhero movies are not my kind of thing — that’s why I’ve never really done one. [I’ve been asked] several times, but I can’t believe in the thin, gossamer tight-rope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero. I’ve done that kind of movie — ‘Blade Runner’ really is a comic strip when you think about it, it’s a dark story told in an unreal world. You could almost put Batman or Superman in that world, that atmosphere, except I’d have a fucking good story, as opposed to no story!”
Now, some superhero genre fans will argue that some of the films that DC and Marvel have offered over the years have had great stories. Winter Soldier, The Dark Knight, etc. But as in all things, we can’t force Ridley Scott to do this, it has to be of his own volition. Besides, it seems the films can do just fine without him.
